Needles One 16” (40 cm) circular needle size US 5 (3.75 mm). One set of four double-pointed needles size US 5 (3.75 mm).
Gauge 28 stitches & 32 rounds = 4” (10 cm) in 1 x 1 Ribbing [un-stretched]. 26 stitches & 40 rounds = 4” (10 cm) in Grid Pattern.
Notions Stitch Marker. Yarn needle. Scissors.
Skills Required Long-tail (or other stretchy) cast on. Knitting in-the-round. Knitting with double-pointed needles. Decreasing.
Directions Using circular needle, and long-tail cast-on method, cast on 112 stitches. Place marker and join for working in the round, being careful not to twist stitches.
1 x 1 Ribbing *k1, p1; repeat from * to end of rnd.
Brim Work in 1 x 1 Ribbing for 12 rounds, or until brim measures 2” (5 cm) from cast-on edge. Change to Grid Pattern for body of hat.
Grid Pattern Rnd 1: *k1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd. Rnd 2: as rnd 1. Rnd 3: Knit. Rnd 4: Purl.
Body Work even in Grid Pattern until hat measures 6.5” (16.5 cm) from cast-on edge, ending on a Rnd 2. Begin decrease sequence for crown.
Crown Note: change to double-pointed needles when stitches no longer fit comfortably around circular needle.
Rnd 1: *k2, k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd—84 sts. Rnd 2: Purl. Rnd 3: *k1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd. Rnd 4: *k1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd. Rnd 5: *k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd--42 sts. Rnd 6: Purl. Rnd 7: *k1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd. Rnd 8: *k1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd. Rnd 9: k1, *k2tog; rep from * to last st, k1--22 sts. Rnd 10: *p2tog; rep from * to end of rnd--11 sts.
Finishing Break yarn, leaving a 6” (15 cm) tail. Thread tail through yarn needle and draw through remaining stitches, pulling snugly to neatly close top of hat. Fasten securely and weave in loose ends on WS.
