KNITTABLE. WEARABLE. GIFTABLE.
Created to optimize those leftover (yet still cherished!) bits of sock yarn, The Aldershot Hat is an easy-to-wear, easy-to-customize stash-buster. Wear it cool and slouchy, or roll up the brim for a cozy fitted beanie. Make it larger or smaller, longer or shorter. Use two colours…or three, or four. Dive into your stash and use your imagination…you can’t go wrong with this super-versatile hat.
THE KNITTY GRITTY
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
10” (25 cm) length x 8.5” (21.5 cm) width / 17” (43 cm) circumference; un-stretched.
With 2.5” (6 cm) brim rolled up, the total length is 7.25” (18 cm).
To fit approx. 22” (56 cm) head circumference.
YARN
A total of ~ 100 grams / 440 yards / 400 meters of fingering weight yarn—1/2 in MC and 1/2 in CC. You will be holding together two strands of yarn throughout—one of each colour.
The sample hat—pictured slouchy—was knit using a solid MC (Ancient Arts Fibre Crafts Socknado in the colour “Champagne”), and a speckled CC (Primrose Yarn Co. Adelaide in the colour “Hermione”). The finished hat weighed 93 grams, and required ~ 220 yards / 200 meters of each colour.
The sample hat—picture as a fitted beanie with rolled brim—was knit using Lichen and Lace 80/20 Sock in the colour “Beach Glass” (MC) and Hedgehog Fibres Sock in the colour Déjà Vu (CC).
It’s easy to introduce as many colours as you like…simply change the colours you’re holding together.
One of my favourite variations uses ~ 50 grams of a solid yarn (MC) and ~ 25 grams each of two different speckled yarns (CC1 and CC2). This variation produces subtle stripes and uses up smaller amounts of leftover speckled stash yarn.
NEEDLES (adjust if necessary to obtain correct gauge)
One 16” (40 cm) circular needle size US 7 (4.5 mm).
One set of four double-pointed needles size US 7 (4.5 mm).
GAUGE
19 stitches & 39 rounds = 4” (10 cm) in Garter Stitch; un-stretched.
