IT’S WINTER, EH!
Cozy and versatile, this wooly unisex hat was inspired by cold prairie winters and beautiful home-grown fibres. The easy-to-memorize pattern allows you to relax into the rhythm of the needles, and the aran-weight yarn makes for a quick and satisfying knit.
Need a smaller or larger size? No problem! General directions are included for expanding the size range almost infinitely!
THE KNITTY GRITTY
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Small/Medium: 11.5” (29 cm) tall with brim unfolded x 8.5” (21.5 cm) wide = approx. 17” (43 cm) circumference.
8.75” (22 cm) tall with 2.75” (7 cm) brim folded up.
Medium/Large: 12.5” (32 cm) tall with brim unfolded x 9.25” (23.5 cm) wide = approx. 18.5” (47 cm) circumference.
9.25” (23.5 cm) tall with 2.75” (7 cm) brim folded up.
YARN
Hinterland Range (50% Rambouillet Wool, 50% Alpaca; 198 yards / 181 meters per 112 grams): 1 skein in desired colour.
Note: Range is a rustic, woollen-spun yarn made from sheep and alpaca wools. It is rich, dense, and a bit heavier than many commercial worsted weight yarns. If substituting, I recommend using a yarn designated as “heavy worsted” or “Aran”. You’ll need approximately 200 yards / 180 meters. As with all knitted hats, obtaining the correct gauge is crucial for optimal results.
NEEDLES (adjust if necessary to obtain correct gauge)
One 16” (40 cm) circular needle size US 7 (4.5 mm).
Four double-pointed needles size US 7 (4.5 mm).
GAUGE
For ease of swatching only—my gauge worked flat in Stockinette Stitch: 18 stitches / 28 rows = 4” (10 cm).
Pattern Gauge—before blocking: 22 stitches / 26 rounds = 4” (10 cm).
NOTES
The Out West Hat has two versions—Offset & Aligned. The “offset” version is visually interesting—when the brim is folded up the cables and ribs do not line up. The “aligned” version is neat and tidy—when the brim is folded up the cables and ribs line up perfectly. The choice is yours :)
